Nutritional systems. Constantly tweaked sources of information we go to when eager to find out what our food contains. However, how much do we really understand? Other than the regular gym-goer, the answer is probably "not much". What does 56g of unsaturated fat even mean?
As one of the millions who fail to answer that question, I decided it was time to freshen up the way nutritional information is displayed on our food packages, or in this instance the lack of nutritional information. Pizza takeaways are constantly said to have bad nutrients for our bodies, but how can we know this is true when our pizza boxes come with no nutritional information? Above, is a functional nutritional system designed to work on any product, be it from your local supermarket or from your nearest takeaway.
After, breaking down current nutritional systems and understanding what was important and what wasn't I began to create my own. I decided to display the "Daily Average Intake" alongside the food product's nutritional information to act as a quick and easy-to-understand system no matter the consumer's age or intelligence level. Including a colour palette inspired by traffic lights speaks to people internationally, similarly to the highway code. Food preservation is conveyed through icons to finish off the piece, allowing people to find the information they need when they need without any hassle.
A clear, simple nutritional system is the way forward.
